Using a high-powered laser, Smartlipo™ is a new LaserBodySculpting^SM procedure with less downtime and side effects than traditional liposuction. It is ideal for treating small cosmetic areas of the face and body but is also ideal in combination with tumescent liposuction for larger areas of fatty deposits.

How does Smartlipo™ work?

Dr. Byrd uses a very small cannula (tube) that's approximately 1.0mm to 2.0mm in diameter (about the size of a pencil lead). The cannula contains a laser fiber that is inserted into the skin. As the cannula is moved back and forth, it delivers the laser's energy directly to the fat cells, causing them to rupture and be easily drained away. The laser energy also interacts with the dermis, resulting in collagen shrinkage.

Because the cannula is so small, Smartlipo™ is a minimally invasive procedure and can be performed under local anesthesia. The laser coagulates small blood vessels on contact, resulting in less bleeding, swelling and bruising and a quicker recovery time than conventional liposuction. Since general anesthesia is unnecessary, the procedure is very safe, with only minimal side effects.

Who is a good candidate for Smartlipo™?

If you have areas of fat that don't respond to diet and exercise, then you're a candidate for Smartlipo™. Ideal candidates are in good health, of normal body weight and have realistic expectations for their results.

What body regions can be treated with Smartlipo™?

Smartlipo™ is a great addition to tumescent liposuction, as well as other Soft Beautification™ procedures. It is ideal for treating small areas of the face, neck, arms, breasts (gynecomastia), and areas of loose and flabby skin (floppy skin). However, it is not a replacement for conventional liposuction.  It works extremely well in combination with the Vaser Liposelection procedure.

How many Smartlipo™ treatments will I need?

Only one treatment is usually required for most patients. A session may last from 45 minutes to one hour for each area treated.

Do I have to do anything post-treatment?

After the treatment you will need to wear a compression garment for several days to several weeks, depending on the body area being treated. Rest is recommended after the procedure and activity may be resumed gradually. Refrain from hot tubs or strenuous exercise for 2 weeks.

Does Smartlipo™ treat cellulite?

The procedure will improve the body's shape and may improve cellulite to a certain degree.

When can I expect to see results?

Results can be seen as soon as a week with continued improvement over several months.

Does laser-assisted liposuction produce lasting results?

Yes! Adults do not create new fat cells. When a person gains weight, the fat cells expand. The Smartlipo™ procedure permanently removes the fat cells.  Should you gain weight, most fat will be deposited in areas where the procedure was not performed.
