Mesotherapy is a procedure that some claim will revolutionize present
treatments for wrinkles, cellulite, and body contouring. Fifty years ago Dr.
M. Pistor, a general practitioner in France developed mesotherapy for skin
disorders, rheumatoid conditions, and pain control.
What sparked Dr. Byrd's interest in mesotherapy?
Dr. Byrd saw a TV interview with Roberta Flack. She had been working with
Dr. Lionel Bissoon and had lost 30 pounds in three months with mesotherapy
and looked great! Dr. Byrd became very excited about the possibility of a
minimal alternative for fat and cellulite reduction.
The next morning Dr. Byrd contacted Dr. Lionel Bissoon and two weeks later
flew to Palm Beach and trained with him. Roberta Flack just happened to be
there that day so she had a chance to talk with her. She told Dr. Byrd her
story of not being able to lose weight with diet and exercise until she
started mesotherapy. The treatments did what exercise and diet could not do
alone.
Dr. Byrd has been doing facial rejuvenation for quite some time. All are
non-invasive cosmetic procedures, now known as minimal facelifts. These
treatments help patients regain and maintain their youthful appearance
without a lot of surgical pain and expense. The addition of mesotherapy gave
Dr. Byrd's patients the extra boost with weight loss in problem areas,
removal of cellulite and improvement in the quality and texture of their
skin.
What is Mesotherapy?
Mesotherapy is a medical discipline involving the injection of antioxidants,
vitamins and/or traditional medications directly into problem areas. With
mesotherapy, the medications are delivered by tiny injections directly to
the site that needs to be treated. This is different than treating a
headache with aspirin, for instance. When you take medication orally,
medication first goes to your stomach, then to your liver, and only then is
distributed throughout your whole system. This process allows medication to
go to places where it is not needed and allows for local as well as systemic
side effects. Mesotherapy medications are placed directly on areas where
treatment is needed. This allows the use of much smaller doses of the
medications while achieving much higher local tissue concentrations.
What is Lipodissolve?
Lipodissolve is a type of Mesotherapy that utilizes only phosphatidylcholine
and deoxycholate (PCDC) to break down the fat cells. Studies by Dr. Patricia
Rittes in Brazil have demonstrated that these two substances are extremely
effective in the permanent removal of fat.
What do Mesotherapy and Lipodissolve treat?
Mesotherapy is very effective in treating cellulite, and wrinkles by
stimulating collagen and elastin production, removing toxins, improving
lymphatic flow and releasing tight septal fibers. Lipodissolve, which
contains PCDC is great for spot reduction and contouring areas of fat like
love handles, thighs, knees, double chins, and saddlebags. It must be
emphasized that Lipodissolve is not intended for weight reduction. Instead,
it is best used in combination with diet and exercise.
Lipodissolve alone will result in marked improvements, but unless lifestyle
changes are made, the results will not be permanent.
For the treatment of cellulite, we use specific medications to dissolve the
connective tissues that produced the "cottage cheese" appearance of the
skin. The formula for cellulite is aimed at increasing the lymphatic flow
and dissolving the fibrous bands that produced the irregular contour of the
skin. Mesotherapy is absolutely the best treatment for cellulite.
The formula for skin rejuvenation includes nutrients and necessary
components of collagen. The medications are injected directly into the areas
where the skin is wrinkled and needs toning. The results are a reduction of
wrinkles, tightening, toning, and return of elasticity. The end result is
that the anatomy and physiology of the skin changes so that we can restore
the underlying support structure. A good analogy is that of replacing the
mat under worn carpet with a new plush mat. It makes the carpet look much
better. There will still be blemishes on the surface, but those can be
removed with lasers or chemical peels.
Are the results immediate?
Since we are working naturally with the body, it is a process. Usually
patients notice a difference by their fourth or fifth treatment. Comments
like "I never thought I would wear this outfit again" are quite common after
several mesotherapy treatments.
How many mesotherapy treatments are needed?
The average treatments usually number from four to eight for fat reduction
and from 10 to fifteen for cellulite treatments.
How often are the treatments given?
Typically the treatments are spaced a two to four weeks apart. If a patient
travels a long distance for treatments we will see them twice within 2 or 3
days.
What are the side effects of mesotherapy treatments?
Bruising is one side affect and the extent depends on the patient's tendency
to bruise. In addition, immediately after treatment, the patient will have a
sensation of burning, stinging, and itching that typically lasts for an
hour. Topical hydrocortisone is applied after treatments to reduce these
symptoms.
