What is the VASER® system?

"VASER®" is an acronym created from Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance, which describes this innovative patented ultrasound technology that breaks up and emulsifies fat prior to aspiration. Its application of ultrasound was designed to enable sculpting so precise it can be used in delicate areas such as the arms, inner thighs, neck and chin. Treatment with the VASER® system has been reported to result in low to minimal pain and low to minimal swelling and bruising.

How does LipoSelection® only by VASER® work?

Tissue selectivity is key. Fatty tissue consists primarily of adipose (fat) cells, but it also contains other important tissues, including nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. The VASER® system utilizes proprietary ultrasound technology to break up fatty tissue before removal. Sound energy, similar to that used to remove a cataract from the eye, fragments fatty tissue. Fat cells, which are large and soft, break apart (think of how easily a full water balloon will burst) while leaving nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue largely undisturbed. Because the sound energy leaves other surrounding tissue relatively intact, patients and physicians report low to minimal pain and low to minimal swelling and bruising. Once emulsified, fat is removed with minimal disturbance to important structural tissue, yielding smooth results.

• Sedation. Anesthesia may be general, local, or local with IV sedation - Dr. Byrd will discuss her preference with you.
  
  
• Infusion. Dr. Byrd creates a tiny incision in the area to be treated. The targeted area is then filled with a special saline solution to make it very wet and full, making the fatty tissue easier to emulsify with the VASER® System's ultrasound energy. This solution includes epinephrine, which shrinks blood vessels to help reduce bleeding and bruising, and lidocaine, an anesthetic agent that helps numb the site.
  
  
• Treatment. Dr. Byrd then inserts a thin grooved probe that is unique to the VASER® System. The probe disperses ultrasound waves around the grooved tip to break down and emulsify fatty tissue on contact.
  
  
• Aspiration. Suction and massage of the sculpted site remove emulsified tissue while leaving blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue relatively intact.

• Recovery. Once the numbing effects of the anesthetic agent wear off, you may experience some discomfort. You and Dr. Byrd will discuss whether over-the-counter and/or prescription pain medication is right for you. Initially, expect some fluid drainage from your incisions.
  
  
• Compression Garment. You will wear a compression garment home from the procedure. This will provide you with comfort and support, and will help your skin settle to your new contours. It is critical that you follow Dr. Byrd's instructions regarding the wearing of this garment.
  
  
• Follow-up Appointments. While you may feel and look terrific, it is essential that you keep your follow-up appointments so that Dr. Byrd can monitor your progress. Imagine how rewarding it will be to compare your measurements and see your "After" pictures!
