Chemical Peels by Atlanta's Byrd Aesthetic &
Anti-Aging Center
Your skin is a living organ made up of
millions of cells. Every day thousands of cells die fall off and are
replaced by new cells from below. Unfortunately, as we age this
becomes a slower and more haphazard process, making your skin unable
to shed dark blotches, sun damage, or a dull, lifeless complexion.
The function of a skin peel is to create an even, controlled
shedding of several layers of damaged cells. This exposes a new
fresh layer of skin with a more even color and a smoother texture.
In addition, the peel stimulates new cells to grow, thereby
tightening the skin, which decreases wrinkling.
There are several types of peels, each using a different chemical to
create this peeling effect. Light and medium depth peels use the
chemical TCA (Trichloracetic Acid) to create their peel.
TCA peels can effectively improve many conditions, including:
Dull, weathered skin
Freckling
Blotchy pigmentation (including the mask of pregnancy)
Sun damage (including precancerous lesions)
Fine wrinkles
Shallow acne scars
TCA is a non-toxic chemical that has been used to perform skin peels
for over 30 years. Unlike some other types of peels, TCA peels have
the additional advantage of creating a fresh, natural
appearing-complexion, while preserving normal skin color. For this
reason, they are often referred to as "freshening peels". Although
one peel can significantly improve the appearance of the skin, some
skin problems are deeper than others. It is possible that you may
require more than one peel to achieve your best results.
TCA peels are performed as an outpatient procedure in the office. A
solution containing TCA is applied to your skin. There is
essentially no downtime with a light TCA peel. During the healing
process there is no pain, but the skin looks as if it has sunburn.
After the first two or three days you will begin to notice shedding
of the skin. Within 1 week the process is complete.
Most people have similar aging and sun damage changes on the neck,
chest and hands as are present on the face. Fortunately, TCA peels
can be performed successfully all these other non-facial areas as
well.
Obagi Blue Peel
If you’re interested in a chemical peel procedure to help
transform your skin, then the Obagi Blue Peel may be right for you.
To pre-condition and maintain the best results, Dr. Byrd recommends
using the Obagi Nu-Derm System to establish a customized skin care
regimen for you to follow.
How It Works
Obagi Blue Peel allows our professional staff to control your
treatment, unlike common at-home procedures or alpha hydroxy peels.
We determine the strength of the peel based on your individual skin
condition and desired outcome. The Obagi Blue Peel utilizes
tricholroacetic acid, more commonly known at TCA, as the active
ingredient combined with the patented Obagi Blue Base. This unique
combination allows us to better visualize the application and tailor
the peel based on your specific level of damage and individual
needs.
What To Expect
An experienced professional will perform the procedure in our
office. The Obagi Blue Peel takes less than one hour and requires no
sedation. It can be done on most body parts; the most common being
the face and neck. The patient will experience a moderate burning
sensation for several minutes and a bluish tint is applied to the
skin that usually washes off within 12 to 24 hours. Light swelling
occurs, increasing with strength and depth of the procedure. Within
2 to 3 days, your skin begins peeling and continues to do so over
the next few days. Your skin should be healed between days 7 to 10,
and you will resume your customized skincare regimen.
Once your skin has finished peeling and recovered, your complexion
will show visible improvement. Over the next 4 to 6 weeks your skin
will continue to improve, becoming firmer, clearer, smoother,
healthier and more youthful looking.
